Vicksburg, Mississippi. It was here that Ulysses S. Grant commanding the Union troops fought a pitched battle against the Confederacy. The battle lasted for 45 days and gave the Union control of the Mississippi River.

The blue markers on the right define the Union lines. The light colored markers on the left showed Confederate positions. 4/2002
